Begin before the plan hardens
Engagement is most meaningful when stakeholders can still influence location, timing, access, mitigation and benefit pathways. Presenting a completed plan for endorsement is communication, not participation.
Early engagement also improves the project’s own understanding of land use, seasonal movement, cultural heritage, water, security and local institutions.
Make information usable
A technically accurate presentation can still fail if it does not answer the questions people actually have. Good engagement distinguishes what is confirmed, proposed, uncertain, outside the company’s control and not promised.
- Use relevant local language and accessible formats
- Include groups who may not speak in public forums
- Document questions, commitments and owners
- Provide feedback even when the answer is no
- Protect confidential and safeguarding information
A grievance system is a learning system
A credible mechanism acknowledges concerns, assesses urgency, assigns responsibility, communicates progress and checks whether the outcome was understood. Patterns in grievances can reveal weak controls before they become larger conflicts.
